Hoop it up, Loop it back, Repeat: A decade of memory and interconnectivity at a Johannesburg basketball court is an installation of artworks reflecting on my memory of a decade of the court community through its quotidian, repetitive, cyclical nature, as well as the cuts and ruptures that occur. The viewer is invited to pass through the threshold between the outside world and the court, and to interact with my artistic interpretations of the loops, hoops and rhythmic nature of each day of communal desire for interconnectivity at the court that forms a foundational netting. The repetition reflects my experience of mothering and family across dissimilarities, while also resonating with the rhythm of hip hop music: ever present at the court. The artwork explores the form of these relationships through crocheted textile, pattern and imagery, creating something strong, durable and able to conduct a sense of warmth and comfort, yet also fragile and easy to unravel.
