Composition and Decompostion

by Nomalanga Siyothula

in partial fulfilment of a Master of Art in Fine Arts

17 to 20 January 2023

This study seeks to engage Thornton Dial and Nomalanga Siyothula’s aesthetics. It will do so by centering composition and decomposition as the analytical tool. It is a study that will engage in the protocols of Fred Moten, making and unmaking for there to be generativity. So, for this to come into being it is important to understand Dial and Siyothula’s aesthetics. Firstly, the study will engage in three forms of aesthetics namely: aesthetics of the black sociality, aesthetics of ruins and disposability and aesthetics of revitalisation and care. It is in that form that Dial’s work will be meditated upon.
