Secondary Passenger

Secondary Passenger as a body of work, speaks on the ways in which people map make within & around a city that is constantly growing outwards or even back into itself like Johannesburg*. More specifically it speaks to the way that sound, especially acousmatic sound, affects the ways we attach ourselves to the city or to any of the places/spaces we find ourselves in.

Secondary Passenger asks that we appreciate the cacophony of this shifting city and the routes that got us to this point.

*This aggressive web of highways, suburbs and shopping centres [...], floating on layers of mined-out conglomerate, being endlessly abandoned, reclaimed, recycled and reused’ Lindsay Bremner.

The phrase “secondary passenger” describes a traveller or migrant in public or private transport who arrives after the primary passenger (driver/pilot) and sonically, it becomes a way to speak through and to the wake that the primary (us) has left behind.
